Ruth Roman was born on June 22, 1939 at Lynn Massachusetts. She was the first child born to Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold & Abraham Roman. When she was young, her carnival barker father passed away and left her mother no option but to be a cleaning girl and waitress to support her family. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She left the school only after two years in order to take on a acting career. It was a difficult path to take. Although she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that were offered to her. While in New York, she was employed at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting and moving back to Boston. In Boston, she worked to make ends meet as an usherette in the morning, while in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
